Daniel Receives a Vision and Is Troubled

In Daniel chapters 10 to 12, we see a very human side of a great man of God. Daniel receives a powerful vision, and instead of feeling excited or proud, he is deeply troubled. His strength leaves him, his understanding is shaken, and he struggles to grasp what God is showing him. Reading this makes me pause and ask myself: Would I respond the same way?

Many times, when we read God’s Word, we also come across passages that disturb us. Not because they are wrong, but because we do not fully understand them. Prophecies, visions, and future events can feel overwhelming. Like Daniel, we may feel weak, confused, or even fearful. Yet this is not a sign of weak faith; it is a sign of honest faith.

God, in His great kindness, does not leave Daniel alone in his confusion. He sends help. An angel comes to strengthen him, speak to him, and explain what is going to happen. Interestingly, the people who are with Daniel do not see the vision clearly. They feel fear without understanding, and they quietly fade away. Daniel is left alone alone to see, alone to hear, and alone to receive God’s message.

There is an important lesson here. God sometimes reveals deeper truths only to those who are willing to remain, to listen, and to endure the discomfort of not understanding everything immediately. Others may walk away when things become frightening or confusing, but Daniel stays.

The message Daniel receives is not an easy one. He is shown that there will be wars and rumors of wars. Conflict, suffering, and turmoil will continue, and evil men will rise to bring harm, even to the Holy Land. Yet the vision also makes one thing very clear: all of this will only last for a limited time. Evil is not in control forever. God is.

God reassures Daniel that He is fully aware of what is happening on earth. He has set boundaries. He has appointed times. He will protect His people and His land. Nothing is random, and nothing escapes His authority. This assurance must have brought great comfort to Daniel’s troubled heart.

Again and again, Daniel is told that he is greatly loved beloved and blessed. This is deeply moving. Daniel has lived in a foreign land for more than seventy years. He has served under pagan kings, faced pressure, opposition, and isolation. Yet he has remained faithful. He has prayed consistently, honored God openly, and refused to compromise his beliefs. God sees all of this, and He is pleased.

What is even more touching is that God sends an angel to let Daniel know that his journey on earth is nearing its end. Daniel does not need to fear the future. Soon, he will rest. Soon, he will stand before the God he has loved and served all these years. There is peace in this message, even though the vision itself speaks of difficult times ahead.

Daniel is also told that his words will not end with him. They are meant for future generations for us. His visions are preserved so that we might read, reflect, and understand that God truly has a plan. History is not moving aimlessly. God is working, and He will bring His purposes to completion.

When I find myself in a quandary when Scripture troubles me or life does not make sense I turn to the Holy Spirit. He is my resident teacher, my guide, and my helper. Sometimes He gives clarity quickly. At other times, He allows the discomfort to remain. In those moments, I am pushed to search deeper, pray more, and wait patiently.

Not every question is answered immediately. But every sincere seeker is guided. Just as Daniel was not abandoned in his confusion, we are not abandoned in ours.

So I ask you, as I ask myself: when God’s Word troubles you, do you walk away, or do you stay? Do you wait for understanding? Do you trust that God, in His time, will reveal what you need to know?

Daniel’s life reminds us that faithfulness matters, perseverance is noticed, and God never forgets those who walk with Him even in foreign lands, even in confusing times, and even when the answers are slow to come.
