One of These Things Is Not Like The Other – Greater Pt. 1

One of These Things Is Not Like The Other
Hebrews 5:1-4 & 7:18-22 & 4:14-16
It takes lifelong dedication to intercede for the brokenness of God’s people, but ultimately no matter how hard someone tries, perfection is not possible. Thanks to Jesus we have a greater advocate that intercedes for us. Dedicate yourself to, and be confident in someone greater.

Choose Wisely
Hebrews 6:13-18, 19-20 & 7:1-3 & 7:11-17(Psalm 110)
If we commit our lives to anything, it requires that we deem it greater than the other things we could have committed to. God made a way for “something greater” to be greater than flesh and blood. Ultimately you have to decide… Is Jesus Greater than your other options?

Who Really Cares?
Hebrews 5:5-10 & 7:23-28
Jesus willingly gave not just a part of himself, but the entirety of his life, heart, and mind to care for God’s people. More than that, He continues that work to this very moment in time, but also forevermore outside of time.

Hebrews 5:11-6:3 & 6:4-6 & 6:9-12
We have to decide if Christ’s care over our life is greater than what life we could attain any other way. It is a constant practice and pursuit of what God said is good. Ignoring Jesus and the way of life he gives to those who believe, is ignoring the only chance we have at being made whole.

When we were children, many of us played a simple game: “One of these things is not like the other.” We would look carefully and try to find which one was different.
In the same way, when we read the book of Hebrews, God invites us to look closely and see that Jesus is not like the others. He is greater.

This message is easy to understand but very deep in meaning. It helps us ask one important question in life:
Is Jesus truly greater than everything else we trust in?

Let us walk through this together, like a pastor speaking to the church, step by step.

Jesus Is Greater Than Any Human Priest

(Hebrews 5:1–4; 7:18–22; 4:14–16)

In the Old Testament, priests were chosen from among people. They prayed for others and offered sacrifices. But church, there was one big problem.

They were human.

That means:

  • They had weaknesses

  • They made mistakes

  • They also needed forgiveness

  • They could not be perfect

No matter how dedicated a priest was, perfection was not possible.

But then came Jesus.

Jesus is different.

  • He is without sin

  • He understands our weakness

  • He speaks to God on our behalf

  • He never fails

Because of Jesus, we have a greater advocate. Someone who truly represents us before God.

Key truth:
Dedicate yourself to someone greater, and be confident in Him.

Choose Wisely: Is Jesus Greater Than Your Other Options?

(Hebrews 6:13–18, 19–20; 7:1–3; 7:11–17; Psalm 110)

Every day, we choose what is important in our life.

We commit ourselves to:

  • Career

  • Money

  • Relationships

  • Education

  • Comfort

  • Status

None of these are wrong. But the question is:
What do we believe is greatest?

If we give our life to something, it means we believe it is worth it.

God made a way for something greater than flesh and blood.
That “something greater” is Jesus Christ.

Unlike temporary things:

  • Jesus does not change

  • Jesus does not fail

  • Jesus does not leave us

We must decide:

  • Is Jesus greater than my success?

  • Is Jesus greater than my fear?

  • Is Jesus greater than my comfort?

  • Is Jesus greater than my own plans?

This is not a one-time decision. It is a daily choice.

Who Really Cares? Look at Jesus

(Hebrews 5:5–10; 7:23–28)

Many people say they care. But actions show the truth.

Jesus did not give:

  • A small part of Himself

  • A little time

  • Some effort

Jesus gave everything:

  • His life

  • His heart

  • His mind

  • His obedience

He suffered. He prayed with tears. He obeyed God fully.

And church, His care did not stop at the cross.

Even today:

  • Jesus intercedes for us

  • Jesus stands for us

  • Jesus continues His work forever

Human helpers come and go.
But Jesus remains forever.

That is why He is greater.

Is Christ’s Care Greater Than Any Other Life You Could Choose?

(Hebrews 5:11–6:3; 6:4–6; 6:9–12)

This part of Hebrews gives a serious warning.

It tells us:

  • Do not stay spiritually lazy

  • Do not ignore what Jesus offers

  • Do not turn away after knowing the truth

Following Jesus is not automatic. It is a practice.

Every day, we must choose:

  • God’s way over our own way

  • Faith over fear

  • Obedience over comfort

Sometimes life offers easier paths. But easy does not mean better.

Important truth:
Ignoring Jesus is ignoring the only way to be made whole.

There is no other option that gives true life, true hope, and true healing.

Why Jesus Is Truly Greater

Let us look clearly and simply.

Jesus is greater because:

  • He is a perfect High Priest

  • He offers a better promise

  • He brings lasting hope

  • He gives complete forgiveness

  • He cares deeply and eternally

  • He leads us to maturity, not emptiness

Other things promise happiness.
Jesus gives new life.

A Simple Personal Reflection

I remember a time when I trusted my own plans more than God. I thought I knew what was best. When things failed, I felt empty and tired.

But when I slowly began to trust Jesus more than my plans, something changed. Life was not suddenly perfect, but my heart had peace. I knew I was not alone.

That is when I understood:
One of these things is not like the other. Jesus is greater.

How Can We Respond Today?

Here are simple steps we can take:

  • Spend time reading the Bible, especially Hebrews

  • Pray and ask God to help you trust Jesus more

  • Compare what the world offers with what Jesus offers

  • Encourage others with God’s Word

  • Search for similar Bible verses and teachings

Growing in faith is a journey. Take it one step at a time.

Church, life will always give us many choices. Many voices will call for our attention. But only one stands above all.

Jesus is not like the others. He is greater.

Let us choose wisely.
Let us trust fully.
Let us commit completely.

And as you continue, search the Bible, read more teachings, and explore related verses. God’s Word will always point you to what is truly greater.

Key Takeaways

  • The message emphasizes that Jesus is greater than any human priest, as He is sinless and eternally intercedes for us.
  • We should choose Jesus over temporary options in life, as He provides lasting hope and true fulfillment.
  • Jesus cares deeply for us, giving His life and staying with us forever, unlike human relationships that may falter.
  • The passage warns against spiritual laziness and encourages believers to actively pursue faith through daily decisions.
  • Overall, we must recognize that Jesus is not like the others; He is truly greater, offering us true life and healing.
