The Size of the Cross and Other Cross Sizes
How Big is Jesus’s Cross?
There are some accounts that question the validity of the story of Jesus’s dying on the cross to save mankind from their sins. For one, they ask, if it is true that Jesus actually died on the cross, would they be able to tell what the exact dimensions of the cross that Jesus died on are?
Fortunately for them, there are now accounts that tell just that. This information was gleaned from historical accounts that tell about people, specifically criminals, dying on crosses. According to these accounts, the cross on which Jesus died is composed of two logs, which, the Greek scholar Vine says, is conceptualized by the Chaldeans long before Christ’s birth. It was then referred to as the torture stake. It has an approximate size of about 11 feet or 3.5 meters long and six inches wide. The cross of Jesus has an estimated diameter of 15 centimeters. It has an estimated weight of around 100 pounds or over 45 kilos.
But before the cross was known as a structure made of two logs, the cross that the Greeks know of as a form of death sentence for criminals was the one bearing only a single log. This was simply set up on the ground and the suspect was either tied or nailed on to it.
Miniature Crosses
And, because the cross is basically now known as the instrument on which Jesus died to save mankind from its sins, a great number of people who call themselves Christians are now on to the trend of hanging on their necks miniature models of Jesus’s cross. These are typically modeled as per the artist’s perception. At times, there are crosses that are made to be used as furniture, such as a desktop ornament or a wall ornament.
Crosses come in two basic types: the traditional cross and the triumphant cross. The traditional cross has its arms straight and extended, whereas for the triumphant cross, the arms usually extend and then curve up on the ends.
The dimensions of a cross vary depending on the owner’s preference, but as for the height, they usually have heights of about six inches for the average sized crosses. The width is typically around four and a half inches. On the other hand, as per the diameter, it usually ranges from 1/4 of an inch to 0.325 inch. The design will most probably depend on the owner’s preference as well. But one thing is for sure: whatever the size or dimensions, and whatever the design of the cross, it will always be meant to remind them that Jesus Christ is their very own personal Lord and Savior.
