In Ephesians 6, we find timeless principles that encourage believers to honor God in every aspect of their lives.

1. Family Relationships: Obedience and Honor

Paul begins with instructions for children and parents. He calls children to “obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right” (verse 1). This obedience is not just about following instructions but about honoring God through respect and appreciation for their parents. The call to “honor thy father and mother” (verse 2) comes with a promise: “that it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth” (verse 3). This commandment, foundational to a stable and God-honoring society, points to the importance of family structure as part of God’s design.

Paul also addresses fathers, cautioning them against provoking their children to anger. Instead, he encourages fathers to raise their children “in the nurture and admonition of the Lord” (verse 4). This involves gentle guidance, loving correction, and teaching the principles of the faith. Paul’s instructions emphasize that family relationships are a place where God’s love and wisdom should be practiced and reflected.

2. Work Relationships: Service and Fairness

Paul shifts focus to relationships in the workplace, beginning with servants. He calls them to be “obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ” (verse 5). Paul encourages workers to serve with sincerity, not merely doing what is required when under supervision, but serving wholeheartedly as if they were serving Christ Himself. This perspective brings dignity to work and reminds believers that God values the attitude and integrity they bring to their roles.

For masters, Paul advises treating their servants with fairness, refraining from threats and abusive behavior. He reminds them that “your Master also is in heaven” (verse 9), underscoring that all people are equal in God’s sight, regardless of social status. Paul’s teachings here highlight the importance of mutual respect and the shared accountability to God. Whether as employers or employees, believers are called to reflect Christ’s character in their work.

3. Spiritual Warfare: The Armor of God

The final section of Ephesians 6 focuses on spiritual warfare, reminding believers of the challenges they face not just in the physical realm but in the spiritual one as well. Paul calls believers to “be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might” (verse 10). Recognizing that our struggle is not “against flesh and blood” but against spiritual forces, Paul urges believers to “put on the whole armor of God” (verses 11-12) to stand firm against the devil’s schemes.

Paul describes each piece of spiritual armor, each representing an essential aspect of the Christian faith:

• The Belt of Truth: Truth is the foundation of our spiritual armor, holding everything together. Walking in truth and being grounded in God’s Word keeps believers from being easily deceived.

• The Breastplate of Righteousness: Righteousness guards our hearts against spiritual attacks. Living in accordance with God’s standards protects us from the enemy’s accusations and keeps our hearts aligned with God’s will.

• The Gospel of Peace: Paul speaks of having our feet “shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace” (verse 15). This means being ready to share the message of peace and having a firm foundation that allows believers to stand strong and unshaken in any circumstance.

• The Shield of Faith: Faith protects us from the “fiery darts of the wicked” (verse 16). It acts as a barrier against doubt, fear, and discouragement, enabling believers to trust in God’s promises and power, even in the face of challenges.

• The Helmet of Salvation: The helmet guards our minds, reminding us of the hope and assurance of our salvation. Knowing that we are secure in Christ protects us from despair and fills us with confidence in God’s love.

• The Sword of the Spirit: The Word of God is our offensive weapon against the enemy. By knowing and speaking Scripture, believers can counter lies, temptation, and spiritual attacks, wielding truth effectively.

Paul also emphasizes the importance of prayer, urging believers to pray “always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit” (verse 18). Prayer is the foundation of spiritual warfare, strengthening us, aligning our hearts with God’s will, and interceding on behalf of others. Paul even requests prayer for himself, asking for the boldness to proclaim the mystery of the gospel (verses 19-20).

4. Paul’s Final Greetings and Encouragement

In his closing, Paul commends Tychicus to the Ephesian believers, calling him a “beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord” (verse 21). Tychicus would share news about Paul’s situation and encourage the church. Paul’s concern for the well-being and encouragement of the believers underscores his deep pastoral love and desire for their spiritual growth.

He ends with a blessing: “Peace be to the brethren, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ” (verse 23). Paul’s final words express his hope for grace upon all who love Christ with sincerity, reminding us of the joy and peace that flow from a genuine relationship with God.

Ephesians 6 provides a powerful reminder that the Christian life encompasses our family and work relationships and that believers are in a constant spiritual battle.
